I was born into a family searching for the American Dream. That dream ceased to exist when my mother, a Dominican immigrant with barely a second grade education, was left to raise five children after my father's death. A family with promise soon faced struggle and a hardship that eventually tore it apart. As the youngest, I saw these struggles firsthand and vowed to break the cycle - the cycle of poverty and missed opportunities.
At the age of 7 I began my first job, packing bags in a supermarket while I attended school. Every job thereafter helped me rise to the next level. Every year of school taught me more and I eventually became the first in my immediate family to earn a college degree.
Today I hold a Senior Vice President position at one of the largest financial services firms in the world and by year's end will have earned a Doctorate Degree in Educational Leadership.
Perseverance, hard work and a relentless desire to rise to my potential have allowed me great success. Now it's my turn to encourage others to do the same. To break those cycles and ceilings, to banish those "labels" and to serve the purpose we were meant to serve.
